About the Book

You've seen them. The couples who still light up around each other.

And maybe, watching them, you felt something you don't often say out loud. If so, you're in good company, and this book was written with you in mind.

You know the couples. The ones who make you look twice.

They've been together for decades, yet there's something about the way they are with each other. The easy laughter. The affection. The unmistakable pleasure they still take in one another. You can't quite put your finger on it, but you know it when you see it.

What is it about those two?

Is it luck? Something they were born knowing? Or have they figured out something about love that the rest of us could learn?

That Kind of Love takes a closer look at what makes these marriages so wonderful. Drawing on the experiences of long-married couples, it goes beyond their stories to uncover the patterns, choices, and everyday ways of relating that help closeness grow.

But understanding what makes their love special is only half the story.

The other half is discovering how those same principles can work in your own marriage. Through relatable examples, fresh perspectives, and insights you can put into practice, you'll begin to recognize what draws you closer, understand what quietly gets in the way, and discover how to create more room for the affection, ease, and delight that make sharing a life together so wonderful.

Because loving someone for a lifetime and delighting in that lifetime together aren't necessarily the same thing.

“Before we dismiss that kind of love as luck, perhaps we should ask whether we have ever been taught how to build it.”Heidi Arabia

Is This Book for You?

Your marriage isn't in crisis. It's just gone a little quiet.

You still show up for each other. You've built a life together, and you're not going anywhere. But somewhere along the way, some of the warmth and closeness, the feeling of being truly known, got quieter. Maybe you've felt it for longer than you've said out loud.

This book may be for you if…

  • you've watched another couple and quietly thought, I want that;
  • you love your partner, and you've wondered whether there could be more;
  • you've wondered whether those couples are just lucky, or whether it's too late for you two;
  • you've tried before, and you're a little tired;
  • you've stayed. That counts for more than you might think.

Drifting into quiet is a common part of long marriages. It doesn't mean you married the wrong person, and it doesn't mean you've failed. Wanting more doesn't mean something is wrong with you. It may simply mean the love never left.

The Story Behind the Search

Excerpts from The Story Behind the Search for “That Kind of Love”

This book began with a feeling I had experienced more than once.

I would come across a video of an older couple on TikTok. They might be laughing together, teasing one another, dancing in a kitchen, holding hands in a hospital room, or quietly tending to one another in some ordinary moment. There would be something in the way they looked at each other, something in the ease between them, that felt immediately recognizable and difficult to name.

Sometimes I would feel a tear come to my eye. Sometimes I would watch the video more than once. And then, like so many other people, I would turn to the comments.

The comments were almost always filled with the same longing.

I want that kind of love.

My grandparents had that kind of love.

May that kind of love hit me like a Mack truck.

But then something about the comments began to bother me.

Why were all of us wishing for this as though it were something that either found us or did not?

Why did almost no one stop and ask what these couples had actually created?

I was approaching my own twenty-seventh anniversary. I was not starting fresh with a new partner and a blank relational history. I was asking this question from inside a real marriage that already contained years of frustration, mistakes, coping mechanisms, repeated patterns, misunderstandings, defenses, and accumulated interpretations.

Could a person twenty-seven years into an imperfect marriage learn to relate differently?

I went to my Facebook page and asked people to nominate couples they believed had this beautiful, exceptional kind of love.

The couples did not describe perfect partners.

They did not say their marriage had been free from struggle.

I wanted to reverse engineer what they had done right.

This book is the record of that search.

Could I learn to create more of that kind of love inside the marriage I already have?

Could you?

About the Author

Heidi Arabia

Heidi Arabia has been married for twenty-seven years. It's a marriage that has been real rather than perfect, built over ordinary days more than grand moments. She never saw that kind of love modeled when she was growing up, and that absence became the question at the heart of this book: what do couples who stay close after decades actually get right?

Curiosity comes naturally to her. She asks the next question, then the one after that, and she notices what most people walk right past. When she isn't chasing that question, she's in the forest, alone with whatever beautiful thing nature has just made. It might be light through the leaves or a small, quiet wonder at her feet, and she feels as if she's the only one in the world seeing it.
